TECHNO-CRAFT FUTURE

A few months ago I wrote about digital printers connected to the Internet for anyone to use (read Digital RTW, in our February 2010 newsletter) and the infinite possibilities they could create. Will tomorrow's designs - like most of today's music - exist as digital files, ready to be "printed" into creation at the click of the consumer's mouse? The customization implications of this are far reaching, presenting limitless colors, materials, styles, and trends into potential existence at once. Who would the design leaders be in this techno-craft future?

Recently, that future got a little closer as researchers at Harvard and M.I.T. developed a self-folding "paper" made of glass fiber, silicon and memory metal. While it's currently only capable of folding in two different pattern ways, the engineered DNA of this material presents a plethora of folding possibilities. My mind immediately connects the dots between online retailers, social networking sites, digital printers, and materials that contort on command. In this brave new world, could my favorite e-tailers send fashion suggestions to my Facebook page for me to print in self-folding fabric? Could my design be a roomy A-line skirt that occasionally pleats itself?
